Easy Co 2-2 casualties

Muster rolls are good source files but pulling the data out helps you visualize things better. 165 E-2-2 Marines went into combat (31 remained on the Zeilin ) . Robert Schultz, a member of E Co at Tarawa , first reported on this. I decided to dig into it myself as well.  Of the 165 in combat, 61 lost their lives and 56 were wounded leaving just 48 standing. The battalion muster header for 11/43 shows 105 KIA which would mean E Co took over half the battalion's losses for those KIA! Not only were they decimated, those surviving ended up separated across different areas on beaches R1 & R2. Jordan found 15 of them on the south beach on D+1.  A number of the 1st platoon ended up with Ryan; others fought in pockets. E Company’s target was the west end of R2. Anywhere on Tarawa was terrible that morning. Looking at this makes me think this area may have been one of the worst.

E Company list of those in combat at Tarawa:
