Gavutu was defended by a fifty man platoon from the 3rd Kure SNLF supported by another 486 air group and construction personnel. There were two hills numbered 121 and 148 from which the Japanese could fight and observe a landing. After a five minute bombardment by the AA Cruiser San Juan and two destroyers, the 397 men of the Marine Corps First Parachute Battalion attacked the island at noon on 7 August. They were pinned down at the docks for awhile and suffered many casualties but took the island and the hills by 1800.
