Posted this picture before but this is a little better quality. I can almost make out the number on the LVT1 in the background. Is it 30 or 50 something?

Just got this book, Iron Graves of Saipan. Author is Dan King who has written several other books on Japan in WWII. Will report in with a book review but it appears to have much interesting information.

Wow! I would be very interested to see the photos and especially the Japanese map. The author of the book mentioned may be on the forum. I will try to follow up and find his contact info. Jon Hi! Thanks for your help. I did manage to print October's muster rolls for the first battalion but I'm still trying to figure out how to read the 'footnotes'. I suspect this may be a time-consuming endeavor. If anyone can come up with a name for the book you mentioned, I'd love to read it. I thought I had read everything about the battle, but don't recall a book about the 18th Marines (maybe Bordelon or Bonnyman?). By the way, I also have a super Tarawa group to a gent from the 2nd tractor battalion (Co. B) named Bryant. There's a photo album with some unpublished pics of Tarawa in it as well as a couple of Japanese flags, bayonet, etc. Also have a captured hand-drawn Japanese map of Betio. Alrighty, well, thanks again. I'll post updates, if anyone is interested.

Assuming this is Red Beach 2. I cant quite make out the name of the tank. Also note Sadu Maru in the background.

OK troops!
I have located the entire database for the old TT. 1,780 pages. Stay tuned. Yes it was well hidden, took a long time, but I got it!

I have two series of pictures of H&S Marines. One group is definitely NZ as they were visiting some sort of Garden with girls and tiki images around. The second series is the H&S Marines sitting around the cactus which is one of the pictures I posted. There could have been radio training at Camp Pendleton. The ranks on the sleaves might help to identify the approximate date too. I will do some more checking and report back!
Thanks,
Jon

Take a look at the attached picture. My dad is in the center and the other Marines I think are H&S 2 men. This has to be either New Zealand or Camp Tarawa. What do you think?

I wonder if that is just debris atop the hill? Just curious where this is located. Does not appear to be Bonneyman's Hill. Jon Don't think that is an 8" gun up there. The only gun mounted that much above ground level was very near the beach and I don't see any beach in the image.

Which gun is that in the background on the hill? Is that one of the 8" guns?
