Probably was not a mistake to take the island. The mistakes were made in the execution and some of the planning. Resulting in additional casualties. The navy was afraid of the Japanese navy so setting up artillery on an undefended nearby island the previous day was refused. The tides were a mistake and a disaster. Having to wade ashore ruined radios and resulted in much lost equipment. The tanks landed without a recovery vehicle and were sent ahead without infantry support. Heavy Japanese resistance at the beaches scattered and sank LVTs which damaged unit integrity. Using an old battleship as a Command vessel turned out to be another mistake. All of this was taken into account and things went much better a few months later at the Marshalls.

Just one of many sand covered structures. Higher than a gun bunker so probably a control center or magazine. Each large gun battery had at least one of each nearby.

Don't think that is an 8" gun up there. The only gun mounted that much above ground level was very near the beach and I don't see any beach in the image.

They are not Marine Corps vehicles so I seriously doubt that they were on Tarawa.

The guns on both Amtracs are oriented the same so I would say that the photographer moved about and recorded both images.

Great picture. Thanks for posting. I have the other pic of the tank there having been dragged from its original position back in the trees where it was knocked out. Wonder if both were taken on the same day.

Sorry. I can give you no help on that one other to note that due to the Japanese gunfire the waves caught hell and organized landing had to suffer as a result. I'll do some reading though and try to provide some meaningful input. Later.

Elements of both B and C Company light tanks made efforts to get ashore. Many drowned out on the reefs of course. Don't know the numbers for each but it wasn't many. Perhaps three or four platoons in total.

Looks like 56 to me and curiously it appears to have a name written above the viewing slot. Unless what I am seeing is an extension of the rooftop tarp. Anyway, 34, 35. and 36 had no names as far as I know.

Great pic. Thanks for posting. You say that the plane was down at "the east end of Betio". Beyond that airfield?

This seems to be during the church service filmed aboard the same ship on which Tractor #6 that I believe also appears in the background. I think it was aboard the Zeilin if I am not mistaken. My own research does not show either tractor in photos after the battle, so I have always assumed that both were sunk off of the reef.

The tractor in front of CHERRY seems to have a number starting with 3 and a name above. The only named tractors in that series that I know of were 32 Hey Mable, 37 Little Joe, and 38 Sweet Flo. I'm guessing Sweet Flo because that second number appears very 'busy' and could be an 8. Just a guess though. This may well be a practice landing at Efate by the way. Note also the turret stars painted out but still visible.
