I did locate my dad's platoon roster (2nd platoon) for L/3/2 and do not see your dad's name on it, so they were in different platoons, at least they were at the time this roster was put together. Could have sworn I'd seen your dad's name somewhere.

My dad was in L/3/2 on Saipan and was wounded at Garapan. I have a list of the guys in his platoon and will see if your father was in his platoon.

Yes, never seen photo before. Had to do some zooming and found Sadu Maru, i think from shape.

Looks like a Kingfisher to me too. Curiously, I can't make out the Sadu Maru or the long pier at this angle. I'm thinking the dark smoke is coming from the pier but can no way be sure.
