Definitely taken from atop Bonnyman's Hill. Note also in the photos, that some of the trees have foot/hand holds cut into them to aid climbing to the top. What a blasted landscape!

Tarawa Photographs and Film / Re: New Pic ??« Last post by Kim Harrison on May 14, 2024, 01:54:57 am »Ive got same problem, photos everywhere, did try putting them in folders, ie Beaches, Prebattle, post battle, Tanks, New Zealand, just got to much lol, gave up that idea lol.
Re: your 2nd pic, my instant thought, was ontop of the command bunker, looking towards west, with the eastern side Bonnyman's bunker in shot, with beach and pier in frame. So i looked at all command bunker pics i have and dosn't seem to be anything around it as high to get that shot. Im triple checking. We have all seen many photos of command bunker looking at its southern side, with knocked out Jap tank ( Norman Hatchs kitten hideout lol ) and steps leading to the top. Ive included a shot looking at the northern, and eastern side of Shibasaki's bunker. Again nothing around, to get the hight of you photo shot. Again just a guess. Warmest Regards 76

It was at an interesting angle for sure. I'll stow it in my pics directory. Here is one more. Looks like it was taken from elevation as well. First time I ever knew exactly where the Shinto temple was. Have close ups with Marines but not showing where it was located. A little hard to find but it is in the pic... Thanks again...

I have same pic somewhere in my collection, from memory its taken from top of eastern side of Bonnyman's bunker. With view of Command bunker in background. Just above the 3 men walking, to their right. 78

Tarawa Talk / Tarawa Marine headstone« Last post by TRGodwin on April 21, 2024, 10:47:31 am »James W. Tobey 2nd Tank Battalion at Tarawa. Purple Heart on headstone but Tobey also received the Navy Cross. Felt only fitting to update info on Find A Grave. Picture of him on TOTW. Double checked. Definitely the right Tobey to me. Decorated by Nimitz at Camp Tarawa. Gravesite in Oklahoma.

Tarawa Photographs and Film / Re: New Zealand or Camp Tarawa?« Last post by jstevens on April 03, 2024, 06:03:19 pm »I have two series of pictures of H&S Marines. One group is definitely NZ as they were visiting some sort of Garden with girls and tiki images around. The second series is the H&S Marines sitting around the cactus which is one of the pictures I posted. There could have been radio training at Camp Pendleton. The ranks on the sleaves might help to identify the approximate date too. I will do some more checking and report back!
Thanks, Jon |
