More likely Hawaii at Camp Tarawa. Never really associate it with the Islands but looked it up and they do have them.. Pendleton has a lot if he was ever stationed there...

Hi cactus Glad to hear from you. Definitely not here in NZ. Yes we can grow some cactus, here, at our homes, never seen wild catus, in all my bush hikes. K Harrison

Take a look at the attached picture. My dad is in the center and the other Marines I think are H&S 2 men. This has to be either New Zealand or Camp Tarawa. What do you think?

Great summary, Gunny. Thank you! Sadly, lessons were learned the hard way but, as you said, they did learn....

Probably was not a mistake to take the island. The mistakes were made in the execution and some of the planning. Resulting in additional casualties. The navy was afraid of the Japanese navy so setting up artillery on an undefended nearby island the previous day was refused. The tides were a mistake and a disaster. Having to wade ashore ruined radios and resulted in much lost equipment. The tanks landed without a recovery vehicle and were sent ahead without infantry support. Heavy Japanese resistance at the beaches scattered and sank LVTs which damaged unit integrity. Using an old battleship as a Command vessel turned out to be another mistake. All of this was taken into account and things went much better a few months later at the Marshalls.

Found a picture of E-2-2 Marine who was KIA at Tarawa, Stanley R. Goraj. I was taken back by the writing which I suppose was from a family member. It pretty clearly states "Gave his life up for Nothing". Then I remembered the controversy which I believe Holland Smith started by saying Tarawa was a mistake. Found a newspaper article which speaks to the matter. Doesn't appear that any of the other leadership agreed with Smith. Apparently, there were a number of families that became inflamed by it all though. I think Nimitz got a letter accusing him of needlessly killing their son. Hard piece of history to digest. My dad said it was necessary but still wonder about why Smith took that position given he had the view at the macro level which few others had and he was a tough old bird to boot.

Just one of many sand covered structures. Higher than a gun bunker so probably a control center or magazine. Each large gun battery had at least one of each nearby. It is fairly large. Look how it extends beyond the trees to the left. I'll have to do some research on this one!

I wonder if that is just debris atop the hill? Just curious where this is located. Does not appear to be Bonneyman's Hill. Jon Don't think that is an 8" gun up there. The only gun mounted that much above ground level was very near the beach and I don't see any beach in the image.

Which gun is that in the background on the hill? Is that one of the 8" guns?
