Greg, yes. Those are amtracs. The first one with 44 is probably one of the most published photos of Tarawa. I can honestly say I have never seen the other one. I'm not sure that is Tarawa. Gunny may be able to establish that. Great picture of Senick. I have seen it before but this has higher quality than what I've encountered. He one a pulitzer for one of his pictures on Betio.  Raymond Matjasic was with Captain Louis Hayward's photographic unit at Tarawa. He is in a picture with the whole group below that is another classic. This portrait picture of him is completely new. Never seen it anywhere before and I've seen a lot. Have been searching for one particular picture of an amtrac for a long time. Maybe #35 or #36 for a long time. Always hoping it would show up one day. Thanks for looking and sharing this material!

number 1

This well published photo shows LVT-1 #44 'Little Beans' hanging on the seawall at Red Beach Two in front of 'The Pocket' and in the foreground is the nose of LVT-2 #2. Out of frame to the right was LVT-2 #9 and LVT-1 #49 'My Deloris', both seen in numerous other photos taken after the battle.

Is this what you were looking for?

This photo was taken on the beach at Namur in the Marshalls.

There are several pics with individuals-named- in them- I was thinking that their families might like them. Is there any way to find relatives currently?
Thank you for the info- it is fascinating. Somewhere I have a short book on Tarawa GD inscribed to me- there are lots of photos in it , I will look to see if there are amtracs=although you all may have sen the book "Betio"calling?

Thanks for the additional pics, Greg. Yes.... Betio Beachhead is one of the classics. My copy belonged to a PFC from K/3/2. This book came with detachable map which are missing from most  books you can find. Mine had one. The Marine circled where he landed on Red Beach 1. As far as contacting families, it is not impossible. I've had about a 20% success rate. Recently, someone contacted me about artifacts that belonged to my dad. Pretty cool as one was a set of dog tags created from New Zealand pennies  that had my dad's info on it. Pretty happy to see that and I'm going to get them at some point. I don't mind giving it a shot if you are. Sometimes, even when I've found the right family, I don't get an answer but I think it is always worth trying. Those that I have made contact with have always been very appreciative of what I've been able to share...

After the battle, a section of 105mm howitzers awaits orders on Red Beach Two.

Don Senick and Raymond Matjasic in the other

This photo was taken in one of the three revetments on the south side of the airfield. Somewhere there is an aerial pic of this plane there.
