The man above the tennis racket appears to be a Navy Corpsman. Also, note the tank tracks in the sand leading to the area of the original post in this thread.

Imposible to say about the name of the tank. It does have a recognition feature which is the single stretch of wire around the center of the turret. I think that CHICAGO had such a wire. Almost certainly one of those originally disabled at that beach. Which is definitely RED BEACH ONE. If you look at the far right of the photo you can see dead Marines hanging in a barbed wire fence. To the right, behind them, is the nose of an LVT-1 which in other photos turns out to be IRON MIKE. Definitely RED BEACH ONE guys.

Interesting. From all that I have read about the battle, both men were killed when a 75mm shell burst in the LVT cabin while they were at the seawall on Red Beach One. Photos of the tractor show the large hole in the left side of the cabin. The Japanese also did not have "mortars" on Betio, although they did have large numbers of 50mm grenade throwers that many misconstrued as mortars.

I'm pretty sure that was the sand-covered Fire Control Center for the two twin 127mm guns on Black Beach One. Either that or one of the two ammunition bunkers for the guns. All three were concrete bunkers covered with sand, and it appears in your photo that remnants of concrete walls are present.

Looks like a Kingfisher to me too. Curiously, I can't make out the Sadu Maru or the long pier at this angle. I'm thinking the dark smoke is coming from the pier but can no way be sure.

Anyone know the name of the 6th Marines S2 Officer who was killed along with a couple of other men on Betio after the island was secured?

Note the overturned and burnt-out truck at the bottom and the demolished buildings seen in earlier pre-invasion pics. Definitely taken from atop Bonnyman's Hill. Note also in the photos, that some of the trees have foot/hand holds cut into them to aid climbing to the top. What a blasted landscape!

Tarawa Talk / Re: Tarawa Controversy« on: February 23, 2024, 04:18:19 pm »
Probably was not a mistake to take the island. The mistakes were made in the execution and some of the planning. Resulting in additional casualties. The navy was afraid of the Japanese navy so setting up artillery on an undefended nearby island the previous day was refused. The tides were a mistake and a disaster. Having to wade ashore ruined radios and resulted in much lost equipment. The tanks landed without a recovery vehicle and were sent ahead without infantry support. Heavy Japanese resistance at the beaches scattered and sank LVTs which damaged unit integrity. Using an old battleship as a Command vessel turned out to be another mistake. All of this was taken into account and things went much better a few months later at the Marshalls.

Tarawa Photographs and Film / Re: 8" Gun picture« on: January 16, 2024, 02:21:05 pm »
Just one of many sand covered structures. Higher than a gun bunker so probably a control center or magazine. Each large gun battery had at least one of each nearby. It is fairly large. Look how it extends beyond the trees to the left. I'll have to do some research on this one!

Don't think that is an 8" gun up there. The only gun mounted that much above ground level was very near the beach and I don't see any beach in the image.

They are not Marine Corps vehicles so I seriously doubt that they were on Tarawa.
